Chelsea has defeated Newcastle United by 2-0 and secured its third consecutive victory in the premier league this season. Fernando Torres and Eden Hazard scored the goals for Chelsea. Chelsea was playing without its regular captain John Terry who was ruled out of the team due to the neck injury.
But, the team didn’t show any nervousness in the absence of its skipper and just outclassed Newcastle. Earlier, Roberto Di Matteo, the manager of Chelsea, didn’t include Frank Lampard in the starting XI which was a bit surprising.
The Chelsea players started the match well and had the opportunity to take the lead in the 15th minute of the match. Raul Meireles passed the ball to Torres who made his way through the midfield and passed the ball to Ryan Bertrand just near the penalty box. But, Bertrand’s shot was not good enough to beat Tim Krul, the goalkeeper of Newcastle. Chelsea earned a penalty in the 22nd minute of the match.
Frank Lampard, who usually takes the penalty shot for Chelsea, was not there on the field. So, Hazard took the penalty in Lampard’s absence and he was bang on target. He beat Krul by a powerful low shot and took Chelsea ahead by 1-0. Branislav Ivanovic had almost doubled the team’s lead in the 30th minute when he deflected Cole’s cross towards the goal post with the help of a header, but, Krul managed to prevent the ball from going into the goal post.
Chelsea was able to double the lead when Torres scored the goal just before the half time. Again, it was Hazard who set up the goal for Torres. The Newcastle team fought hard in the second half and created some opportunities, but, they didn’t manage to find the net and lost the game.
