Manchester United has defeated Chelsea in a Premier League match played at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. United won the match by a close margin of 3-2. This was the seventh victory for United in the competition. This win took United to no. 2 in the points table. Manchester United is now only one point behind Chelsea which is at the no. 1 position.
This was the first defeat for Chelsea in the competition. Roberto De Matteo’s team had won seven out of its previous 8 matches and the remaining one match had ended in a draw. On the other hand, United had lost two matches in the competition before this game. Both the teams were quite balanced and this was expected to be a cracker of a match and that’s what the match turned out to be.
The Stadium was jam packed and the Chelsea supporters outnumbered the Manchester United ones. But, the blues weren’t able to stand up to the expectations of the fans. They didn’t play that badly in the match, but, the end result didn’t go in their favour.
Chelsea was reduced to 10 men when Fernando Torres was shown the second yellow card in the 68th minute of the match. At that time, the scores were levelled at 2-2. But, Torres’ exit from the ground gave Manchester United a very good opportunity to dominate Chelsea. The United team managed to get ahead in the 75th minute of the match when Chicharito scored the goal by capitalizing on a fine cross from Rafael.
Earlier in the match, Manchester United took the lead of 1-0 in the 4th minute courtesy of an own goal from David Luiz. Just a few minutes later, Robin Van Persie doubled the lead of United. But, Chelsea came back into the match with the goals of Mata and Ramires later on.
Chelsea will take on Manchester United again in a Capital One Cup game at the same venue on Wednesday.
