Former AC Milan midfielder Demetrio Albertini is convinced that striker Fernando Torres will start scoring goals when he is given time.
The Chelsea striker, who is on loan at the club for the next two years, opened the scoring account against Empoli at the start of the season. However, the 30-year-old has not found the back of the net since then. He has already made 10 appearances in the Italian Serie A. Manager Filippo Inzaghi recently appeared to threaten that Torres may not retain his starting spot for much longer if he continues on this poor form.
Torres has not been the same striker since he left Liverpool in 2011.Albertini, though, says that there is nothing wrong with the player in a physical sense and he argues that Torres struggles to find goals due to the lack of confidence. The Spaniard has averaged around one goal every three games in the last few years. This is in sharp contrast to his time at Liverpool when he scored almost a goal per game and was elevated to the position as being one of the best in the world. Torres has not featured for Milan since the 1-1 draw against Inter in the Milan derby.
“If you want to see the real Nino, then you have to wait. The current Torres is not the one we all knew. He is coming off two seasons in which he played very little, so it’s not easy to find yourself after that.Fernando must be aware of what he has gone through, to rediscover self-confidence and belief in himself not just through words, but also through actions. I think the difficulties for Torres are, other than settling in, finding a team that has changed a lot from last season and has a new coach,” said Albertini.
