There have been several rumours surrounding Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann in the last few months. The striker has been linked with a move to the English Premier league with Manchester United being one of the heavily interested clubs.
The striker is expected to cost around £ 85 million, as United are more keen on activating the player’s release clause rather than negotiating with Atletico Madrid. Fernando Torres is no stranger to the Premier league after having played for Liverpool and Chelsea. He also took a similar path after moving from Atletico to the Premier League.
Yet, he says that there is little reason for Griezmann to follow a similar route. Compared to those days when Atletico did not have elite status, the club have managed a lot of success in the last five years under the regime of Diego Simeone. They have been regular Champions League qualifiers while they have also reached the final of the competition on two occasions. While Diego Simeone has been resigned to losing Griezmann in the summer, Torres wants the Frenchman to stay at the Vicente Calderon. Griezmann’s move to United will depend on the possibility of the club managing a top four finish in the Premier League, although it looks highly unlikely at the moment.
“Where are you going to go to improve what you have at Atletico? Not many places in the world. I hope he can stay with us forever. When young players become one of the best in the world, everyone wants to sign them. But you can go to many other places in the world and they cannot offer what Atletico can offer you right now: competing in the league, competing in the Champions League, one of the most respected teams in Europe — there is no reason to leave,” said Torres after the Champions League match against Leicester City.
