Chelsea’s Spanish winger Juan Mata has said that Fernando Torres is the right striker for the club.
Fernando Torres has struggled for both fitness and form since moving from Liverpool in a £ 50 million deal, which made him the most expensive British transfer of all time, last January. So far, he has managed less than ten league goals, which is something that Mata is close to achieving.
Mata arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £ 24 million deal from Valencia and has been one of the most impressive players at the club this season. Despite costing only half the price as Torres, Mata has been extremely effective in the Chelsea midfield.
He has been largely used as the winger in the 4-3-3 formation, with Didier Drogba playing the striker’s role. He and Daniel Sturridge have by far been the best players for Chelsea this season. They have continuously dominated the image of Fernando Torres, who has spent a large portion of the season on the bench.
Still, Mata has reminded everyone that it will not take long for Torres to return to form. Fernando Torres showed signs of life earlier in the season when he scored against Manchester United and in the match against Swansea. However, he has since been poor after receiving the red card against Swansea.
“Fernando is working hard every day in training and for sure the goals will arrive soon. Fernando always has goals and for sure for Chelsea he has to score a lot of goals. My goal wasn’t enough and we are very disappointed with the point because we needed three points,” Mata said after the match with Fulham, in which Chelsea could manage only a 1-1 draw.
Mata spoke about the disappointment of the draw, but vowed to bounce back in the subsequent fixtures.
