Fernando Torres has spoken about his reasons for moving away from Liverpool to Chelsea in the January transfer window of 2011.
Fernando Torres became the British transfer record after signing for Chelsea in a £50 million each back in January 2011. He was signed on the final day of the transfer window, but he has not exactly covered himself in glory since.
So far, Torres has scored only five goals in 35 appearances for Chelsea, which is one of the poorest in the league. Many are expecting him to leave Chelsea in the January transfer window, although some are even predicting that January could be the make or break time for Fernando Torres.
Now, the Spaniard has spoken about his reasons for leaving Liverpool in the first place. He said that Liverpool’s new owners never really told the fans the real situation. It is thought that Liverpool’s new owners were not willing to spend the huge amounts of money in one single season, but rather invest diligently over the course of several seasons. It is something that would clearly take time and Torres has said that he did not have time on his hands. Hence, he came to the conclusion that he had to leave Liverpool in order to get some trophies under his belt. With their Champions League Odds drifting over the last few seasons, fans can understand the Spanish striker’s frustrations.
“They made promises that they didn’t keep and I left because I realised I didn’t have time to be part of a project that would take years. I didn’t want to leave Liverpool the way I did but the club lied. I was let down and I don’t understand why the fans hate me,” Fernando Torres said in an interview given to a Spanish radio.
Fernando Torres will be getting his major break at Chelsea when Didier Drogba leaves for the Africa cup of nations in January, leaving only two recognised strikers at the club now that Anelka has moved on to China. Chelsea will be hoping to capitalise on their recent good form in the Champions League and in the FA Cup, where they are the standout favourites thanks to an easy draw so far – it might just be worth a chelsea bet or two.
